It seems that Petersburg was not a scene of fighting in the War of 1812, but it contributed 103 young men to the Federal Army, and Presi dent Madison, in an address expressing his thanks for the services of these men, called Petersburg the Cockade City of the Union, an appellation that persists to the present day.
