This work has been written to meet a widely-expressed desire for information regarding the management of triple and quadruple expansion engines and boilers, and the Author has endeavoured to produce a book that would, in plain everyday language, place before engineers a digest of the experience of those who have been in charge of machinery of the above description, together with such rules and directions as may have been suggested by these experiences, in addition to a popular description of the more prominent inventions and appliances that have been recently adopted in connection with such machinery.
