It would seem that the setting aside of so many documents could be justified only if the style of the monuments in question had been found to be inconsistent with that of other and more numerous monu ments of better authenticated date. But I found that such was far from being the case. Indeed, the penury of dated monuments of this period in France is a commonplace.
