For many years following the explora tions of Cartier in the new world, France had little chance to take advantage of the opportunities opened up, and it was not until the beginning of the seventeenth cen tury that the spirit of commercial enter prise and the zeal for discovery awoke and any real effort was made to develop trade or encourage settlement.
