Somewhat precedent in point of time to the opening Revolt Of of the century and the breaking out of the Thirty Years' War must be named the Revolt of the N ether lands; for the spirit that produced both outbreaks was identical, and the events that grew out of them have rendered the Seventeenth Century one of the brightest epochs of the world's history in the cause of civil and religious liberty.
