The essential difference between pure and applied mathematics lies in the fact that symbols are employed in pure mathe maties for the purpose Of conveniently studying the relations between the quan tities they represent, entirely independently of arithmetical or practical applications; Whereas, in applied mathematics the sym bols are employed especially for the pur pose Of enabling practical and arithmetical solutions and applications to be Obtained from the expressions of the laws control ling such quantities.
