It was for this reason that Venizelos while systematically maintaining the tradi tional friendship of Greece with the Western Powers, sought also to promote and maintain friendly relations with all the other Great Pow ers in order to secure, as much as possible, their support, or at least to prevent their attitude from being inimical to Greece at the time of the settlement of the questions in which Greece was interested.
