Those who are acquainted with the general attitude towards women which obtained in Italy, as in every southern country, will be able to form some idea of the magnitude of the task which confronted the wives and daughters of the makers of modern Italy, and the mothers of the modern Italians, who were determined that woman should have her proper place and exercise her legitimate in?uence in the moulding and consolidation of modern Italian national life.
