The mysteries of Asia have been opened out. The conquest of America has been completed. Offshoots of our island civilisa tion have overspread continents hidden in the bosom of the Southern Seas, and have ploughed up the Canadian wilderness. All the while, Europe herself has suffered convulsions at home, in the endeavour to adjust her political and social fabric to the rapidity of economic change.
