A more memorable epocha does not present itself in the history of Spain, than the period when the battle was fought, which overturned the government of the Goths, and established the power of the Arabians in that kingdom. From the year 712 down to 759, the country was ruled by governors, appointed by the Caliphs of Damascus, till at length Abdulrahmen, the last of the Ommiad family, threw off the yoke of the barbarous Abdalla, of the house of Abbas, and became the first king of Cordova.
