It has not been my purpose to compile a dictionary of sculptors, but I have included in the book a considerable number of names, believing that the usefulness of the book would be thereby increased, though I am quite aware that some of the names I have omitted, especially in the chap ters on modern sculpture, may be no less important than some of those that I have mentioned. A choice had to be made, and I have chosen as best I could.
