The importance and the timeliness of the subject treated in these lectures are sufficiently evident. As to the method of treatment, I leave the reader to judge. The references given are sufficient to show how far I have gone to the sources. The citations from the Koran may be thought too extensive. My only defence is that I could not well have left any out; in fact, I have considerably reduced the num ber contained in the first draft of the lectures.
