This series of historical essays and tales of history is offered to the public with the hope that it may be found interesting read ing, at least in parts. It is not consecutive historical narrative; indeed, it may appear rather disconnected; but the attempt to write a connected and consecutive history of Maine, or of any part of the history of Maine is hereby expressly disclaimed. For that reason it may, perhaps, be found interesting to other readers be sides Maine people. The book covers a period of our history which is of as much interest to a Canadian, and to a Westerner as to the sons of Maine. For the matter of that, if it were of inter est to none but sons of Maine, it would interest a very large number of American citizens, for the sons of Maine are to be found in every state in the union. The fact that it is a series of essays and tales may recommend it to many readers, because, on that account it may be read, a chapter here and a chapter there, as one chapter or another treats of subjects of especial interest to particular per sons. The series of essays appeared first in the Catholic Opinion. A weekly published in Lewiston. It was received so kindly and cordially that I was tempted to rewrite the series and publish the same in the form of a book. I fell into the temptation, and here is the result.
