IN response to an invitation extended on behalf of the Governor of the Commonwealth of Penn sylvania, and the State Board of Commissioners on Gettysburg Monuments by Colonel John P. Nichol son, secretary of the Board, the poem which leads this collection was composed, and was pronounced at the dedication of the Pennsylvania monuments on the battle-field of Gettysburg on September 12, 1889.
