Although several chapters in the present volume bear the same title as those in a. Work upon Earthquakes and other Earth Movements written for the International Scientific Series' in 1883, it will be found that the subject matter Of these largely consists of Observations which are not only new, but more extensive and trustworthy than were formerly obtainable.
