The Lord Chancellor of Ireland having placed at the disposal of the President and Fellows of King and Queen's College of Physicians a premium for an essay, on some subject connected with the treat ment of insanity, the President and Fellows conse quently selected and publicly announced The use of Narcotics and other remedial agents calculated to produce Sleep in the treatment of Insanity. This essay, having met with the favourable notice of the President and Fellows, is now submitted to the Pro fession. The importance of this subject cannot be over estimated — to induce sleep in every stage of in sanity is most desirable — to procure it in incipient cases, is often to effect a cure — and in many per sons, the symptoms primarily nervous, become sub sequently in?ammatory, if vigilantia be not arrested — many cases of insanity being entirely prevented by procuring sound and refreshing sleep.
