HE present edition has been carefully revised, and somewhat enlarged by additions to the text. The catalogue of paintings has been greatly extended, and ren dered more complete. It is not, of course, exhaustive, nor can it be supposed to record all the masterpieces of Re naissance painting, except in regard to those artists who produced few pictures, or of whose works but few still exist. The selections have been made with the assist ance of the best authorities in the history of art, and years of earnest personal study.
