It has been truly said that all powerful and permanent Rules grow, and there have been sever al stages in the growth of the Rule of the Clares. During the lifetime of St. Glare herself we may distinguish, as I have elsewhere pointed out,5 at least three stages in its evolution, and these, so far as I am able to elucidate them, will form the subject of the following pages.
