IT is often quite as difficult to find an appropriate title as to write a book. It is not tactics, nor strategy, nor a systematic course of military instruction that is the subject of the following pages; and now that they lie in a complete form before me, I am really in doubt as to What to call them. A name must be found to denote their contents, and one Which, at the same time, does not promise more than it can perform.
