The delay in the publication of this little work needs apology; it is due to the illness of the author, and his return to a bookless land. I wish to express my thanks to the Rev. Canon J. R. Wilford, b.d., of College House, Christchurch, without whose help it would have been hard to overcome the latter difficulty; also to the Rev. H. C. Money, of Christ Church, Glasgow, who has kindly consented to read the proofs also to the Rev. J. O. F. Murray, D.D., Master of Selwyn College, Cambridge, and to the Rev. Professor V. H. Stanton, D.D., Regius Professor of Divinity, for kindly and practical sympathy. The book itself does not in any sense claim to be a learned book; it is only the product of elementary theological training combined with a sympathetic read ing of the literature of the periodk — which is not large. The title, Apologetics rather than Apologists, left it open to treat the subject in a general manner and it has only been possible to make a few scattered remarks on what is a vast field of knowledge.
