The book contains twenty essays dealing with food and nutrition as a ‘convivium'. The idea of ‘convivium’ calls to mind a mediation between the materiality of the food and its immaterial values, between physiological need to eat and sharing within a community, between individual choices and brotherhood. This is the approach that the UCSC ExpoLAB working group deemed to be the most appropriate to provide a contribution on the themes of Expo 2015: Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life. The essays are grouped around four perspectives on the ‘convivium’: the first is the anthropological and historical-cultural perspective and refers to the meaning of ‘convivium’; the second refers to the representation of the ‘convivium’ in art and communication; the third refers to values and behaviours, and then education, by looking at a ‘sustainable convivium’ in a social, pedagogical and cultural perspective; finally, the fourth perspective refers to access to and exclusion from the ‘convivium’, and to the ‘convivium’ that is still denied to a consistent part of humanity. Different disciplinary fields are combined within each of these four perspectives: the philosophical, theological and historical-cultural aspects; history of art and communication; behavioural psychology and education science; social sciences and economics.
