Though much gratified by his kind approval of what I had written upon the portion already in prints I could hardly look upon myself as qualified to undertake such a task - who indeed could hope to succeed in fitly editing fragments which had not received his last energizing touches? Whatever diffidence may have at first deterred me yielded on further reflection to your pressing solicitation.
