A brief account of the origin of the vestments and altar hangings, of the symbolism of colours, and of the early examples of coloured ornaments is provided and at the end, for practical purposes,a scheme of colours is set out in full. It is what, in the judgment of the authors, after weighing carefully all the evidence and assess ing the true value of each item, represents the general usage of the Church of England in pre Reformation days.
