The passages have been purposely chosen as con structive rather than controversial. The atmosphere of passing controversies has been deliberately avoided. The reader may sometimes be puzzled to find himself passing from philosophy to theology. On re?ection he will, I think, see that this is only a natural consequence of what was to Dr. Holland at once his philosophy and his theology. To him the world of thought was one; a world without God was not a world; the process by which man passes from the primary human experience to the living' faith through Christ in God was continuous; the logic of faith was the logic of history and fact, the logic of human experience — the philosophy, as he said, of the man who has become aware of the meaning and purpose of human life as a valid whole.

The welcome which was given to the Memoir of Jenny Lind in the original edition of two volumes has encouraged us to offer it in a smaller and less expensive form. In its first form it was essential that it should aim at completeness and thoroughness of treatment. It had to omit nothing that might legitimately be asked for, by those to whom her memory was dear in Sweden, and in Germany, no less than in England. It had to satisfy the attention and the interest of musical experts, to whom her career was a record of artistic perfection. To do this, it could not but be lengthy, detailed, and somewhat expensive. But, after all this has been done, there remains a larger English public, to whom she had become a name rather than a positive memory; who had never heard her sing: but yet to whom her life could not but appeal with the irresistible force that belongs to genius whenever it is allied with simplicity, candour, purity, and courage. To them, her story would speak home, if only they had the opportunity of reading it.We have, therefore, ventured on the task of reducing the memoir to one volume, by vigorous curtailments, and by omission of much technical matter.

This little book may Win forgiveness if its preventive and prohibitive purpose be fully recognized. It makes it finally impossible for me to write a volume of Reminiscences. It is wise to guard against this in time. For the period of anecdotage is fast drawing in upon me. And at any moment of weakness I might yield to a publisher's bribe, and the worst would have happened. It is the last dotty years that do all the mischief. Old age affords a fatal leisure and, then, the devil gets busy with one's idle hands. So, now, I have taken steps to forestall a lapse. I have scrapped the materials that might have been of service. The Public is saved. And it may, therefore, be the better inclined to tolerate kindly this casual gleaning out of the memories that lie behind me.
