The substance of this volume originally appeared in the columns of the Aberdeen Weekly Journal, but it has been carefully revised and important additions made. From the variety of matter, and number of personages treated in the work, it may be interesting to a Wide circle-of readers. I have not deemed it necessary to burden the pages of this volume with a multiplicity of references and foot-notes, as the original sources of information are often indicated in the text itself. It may be well, however, to state that I have long been familiar with the national records of Scotland, such as the Scots Acts of Parliament.

At the outset it seems necessary to indicate some of the general features of the subject, and the method of treating it.The watershed of Scotland runs southward from Cape Wrath to the head of Loch Quoich. Thence it turns eastward between Lochs Lochy and Oich; then sweeping round the top of Strathspey and over the hills above the head of Loch Laggan; thence following a curving southerly course past the west end of the Moor of Rannoch and the Brae Lyon mountains to Crianlarich; whence across Ben Lomond, and south-eastward over the Campsie Fells into the broad Lowland Valley. The sources of the Spey and the Dee lie on the highest point of the watershed.The widest region of the wildest scenery in Britain is contained in the one hundred square miles of rugged mountain and corry lying between Glen Feshie and Glen Quoich, which comprises the summits of Ben Muich Dhui, Cairngorm, and other mountains, and the great corries of Braeriach and Ben-na-Bhuird.
