When the companions knew that the apostle was alive they gathered around him from all sides. He proceeded to the pass of Chod, and wished them to go to the mountain. A big stone was, however, in the way, to which he was unable to climb on account of fatigue. Accordingly Ttolhah sat down, and his lordship, placing his blessed foot on his back, stepped up to the rock, and said that Ttolhah had a claim to paradise. When the battle-field had been abandoned by the warriors of the age in conformity with the saying, Distich When the valiant lion leaves the desert, Then the jackal becomes alert.

While traditions alone have to be depended upon in many matters connected with other religions, for Islam, dates and facts supply the groundwork on which its rise and progress can be faithfully and historically recorded. It was providential in every way that the faith and zeal of Muhammad were followed by the loyalty and steadfastness of Abu Bakr and the boldness and determination of O'mar, rather than by the weakness, vacillation, and favouritism of O'thman or the procrastination and mildness of A'li. On the death of Muhammad, in June, ad. 632, rebellions and insurrections arose throughout Arabia. It was due to the firmness of Abu Bakr that these were promptly put down. His faith in his great master was such that he determined to carry out the ideas and wishes of the prophet even as if he had been still alive. It was this faith which securely laid the foundations of Islam.

The translator has pointed out in his preface, and foot notes 5 and 21, that Muhammad himself never claimed any supernatural powers; that the attribution of miracles to the prophet is not warranted by the Koran; and that there is a space of seven hundred years between the two bio graphies mentioned in the preceding paragraph. But tradition, which grows with time as stories grow with repetition, has now heaped a mass oi' wonders upon the apostle's head. The earliest life of this great man, written by Ibn Ishak and Ibn Hisham in a very detailed and sober manner, makes but slight mention of miracles. But the Muhammadan masses, like the masses everywhere, are averse to philosophy, and hunger after marvels. Their understandings seem attainable only through their imagina tion and their senses. In a word, they prefer miracles to historical facts. And so it comes about that, the later the life of Muhammad, the greater the number of his miracles, and the more of them the better for the popularity of the work.
