In the Preface to the First Edition, I stated that my object in writing this Digest was to reduce the English Law relating to Agency to a concise statement of definite rules and principles, illustrated by decided cases. In this Edition the original form of the Work has been retained; but several new Articles have been added, and the number of illustrations and cases cited has been considerably increased. I have duly noticed the cases reported down to the end of 1897, and have added references to those in the Times Law Reports.I have pleasure in acknowledging my indebtedness to my friend Mr. J. B. Matthews, of the Middle Temple, for valuable suggestions, some of which I have adopted.
