Hinduism and Buddhism: An Historical Sketch. E-book. Formato PDF Charles Eliot - Forgotten Books, 2017 -
The present work was begun in 1907 and was practically com plete when the war broke out, but many circumstances such as the difficulty of returning home, unavoidable delays in printing and correcting proofs, and political duties have deferred its publication until now. In the interval many important books dealing with Hinduism and Buddhism have appeared, but having been resident in the Far East (with one brief exception) since 1912 I have found it exceedingly difficult to keep in touch with recent literature. Much of it has reached me only in the last few months and I have often been compelled to notice new facts and views in footnotes only, though I should have wished to modify the text. Besides living for some time in the Far East, I have paid many visits to India, some of which were of considerable length, and have travelled in all the countries of which I treat except Tibet. I have however seen something of Lamaism near Dar jeeling, in northern China and in Mongolia. But though I have in several places described the beliefs and practices prevalent at the present day, my object is to trace the history and develop ment of religion in India and elsewhere with occasional remarks on its latest phases. I have not attempted to give a general account of contemporary religious thought in India or China and still less to forecast the possible result of present tendencies.

The incarnate Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of Tibet are a travesty of the Mahayana which on Indian soil adhered to the sound doctrine that saints are known by their achievements as men and cannot be selected among infant prodigies 3. It was the general though not universal Opinion that one who had entered on the career of a Bodhisattva could not fall so low as to be reborn in any state. Of punishment, but the spirit of humility and self-effacement which has always marked the Buddhist ideal tended to represent his triumph as incalculably distant. Meanwhile, although in the whirl of births he was on the upward grade, he yet had his ups and downs and there is no evidence that Indian or Far Eastern Buddhists arrogated to themselves special claims and powers on the ground that they were well advanced in the career of Buddhahood. The vow to suppress self and follow the light not only in this life but in all future births contains an element of faith or fantasy, but has any religion formed a nobler or even equivalent picture of the soul's destiny or built a better staircase from the world of men to the immeasurable spheres of the superhuman?
Turkey in Europe. E-book. Formato PDF Charles Eliot - Forgotten Books, 2017 -
Of corruption, so to speak, I added, striving. To make things plain. Exactly, said the Vali, and that will at once be understood as a seditious allusion to the Sublime Ottoman Government. No, it cannot be. And to show that his decision was irrevocable he again assumed his virtuous air, and said, All civilised countries are governed by law, and I am surprised that one who has lived in the Ottoman dominions as long as yourself should suppose that Turkish officials can be induced by hopes of personal advantage to neglect the regulations issued for their guidance. Law and obedience are the foundation of the State.
