IN preparing the material for a lecture on Charts for Columbia University, the writer was impressed with the fact that although nautical charts are mentioned or dis cussed in many publications, there was not found any one which covered the general subject of their origin, con struction, and use. In the countries of the world more than a million copies of such charts are now issued annually. A considerable portion of the human race is interested directly or indirectly, whether as mariners or passengers or Shippers, in navigation upon the sea. Aside from supplying a handbook for those who might have a general interest in the subject, it was thought that a discussion of charts might lead to further con sideration of the principles governing their construction. This paper has intentionally been made as non technical as seemed feasible in treating a somewhat technical subject. The writer is indebted to the Coast and Geodetic Survey for various illustrative material from its archives, and to a number of authors for facts or suggestions. A list is appended of books and papers which have been freely consulted, bearing on this and related subjects.

HE first edition of this work appeared in 1880; but its circulation was interrupted by a fire which destroyed the plates. A re newed demand for the work seems, however, to warrant the author in presenting a revised and much enlarged edition, in which the scope of the general subject has been widened, and its illustration has been made still more com plete by additional stories of composers whose success has been due in some degree to the in?uence of woman. The work has been written in the leisure hours of other pursuits, and of necessity is compiled from the writer's musical readings. A long list of authorities has been consulted for facts bearing upon the sub ject; and, so far as is known to the writer, only the highest have been laid under contribution. As a well-stocked musical library is something of a rarity in this country, he ventures to hope that his compilations, and his comments thereon, will be of interest to the musical student, and possibly of value to the general public.

Third, the planets are described in a separate chapter, with illustrations intended to enable the uninitiated reader to follow their paths among the stars and to predict their approximate places for himself. In consequence of their constant motion, the planets cannot be indicated by symbols definitely located on the charts like the fixed stars.
