Reminiscences of General Herman Haupt. E-book. Formato PDF Herman Haupt   -  Forgotten Books, 2017  -

There is too much truth in the Irish observation that "Ho one thinks of strewing flowers on a friend's grave till after he is dead."The writer entertained a decided feeling that a man like General Haupt, full of years, of goodness, of unselfish patriotism, and of widely fruitful deeds, certainly should have his "grave" bestrewn with the very choicest flowers while yet there was life to enjoy their fragrance. This feeling led to the publication of the present volume. The main portion of it, which is General Haupt's, was committed to writing by him in 1889. He had no intention of publishing the collection - merely desired to get into record form, for the gratification of his grandchildren and other immediate descendants, many important facts concerning our civil war which had entirely escaped the attention of historians - especially those in which he was either the foremost or a conspicuous actor. They embrace personal interviews with the President, Secretary of War, General Halleck, and the Generals in command of the armies in the field, of which there are no official records. While going over his manuscript in search of material to verify certain portions of a Life of Edwin M. Stanton, the writer discovered not only the general historical value of the matter, but that the almost abnormal modesty of the narrator had resulted in so much self-submergence as to entirely deprive him of many important honors to which he was incontestably entitled.

Forest Valuation. E-book. Formato PDF Herman Haupt Chapman   -  Forgotten Books, 2017  -

The term Forest Valuation, applied to this volume, covers only a portion of the subject of Forest Finance, which is usually separated into two parts, termed, respectively, Valuation and Statics. Valuation deals with the determination of the value of standing timber, both mature and immature, and of forest soil, and the forest as a whole. Forest Statics deals with the comparison of financial results obtained in forestry with those yielded by other enterprises, and compares the relative merits of different methods of treating the forest. This subject is discussed in Chapter VIII. Since Forest Valuation includes the greater portion of the text, and this term is more familiar to American foresters, it has been adopted as the title, in place of the more comprehensive term. Forest Finance. The literature of Forest Finance is largely of German origin, and has been developed in the latter half of the nineteenth century, by numerous German and French authorities. The standard English text is found in "Forest Management," by Sir William Schlich, Vol. III, Part II, Forest Valuation. This author follows the continental treatment of the subject. In 1909, a pamphlet on "Forest Finance" was published by C. A. Schenck, Ph.D., Forester to the Biltmore estate,! which gives a synopsis or outline of a series of lectures on the subject. Dr. Schencks treatment is thoroughly American and contains valuable suggestions for the advanced student of Forest Finance.
