The Coats of Arms of the Nobility and Gentry of Yorkshire. E-book. Formato PDF J. Horsfall Turner   -  Forgotten Books, 2017  -

More than twenty-five years ago, Mr. Joseph Dodgson, of Leeds, issued a circular notifying his intention to publish a small folio volume with the title, "Heraldry of Yorkshire," to be issued to subscribers at 31s. 6d., and to non-subscribers at two guineas. He stated that the book had long been wanted and would be found invaluable. He further stated - "I have in my possession the wood blocks of the Arms of the Families in the list herewith given. Should your name not be included in this list, and you feel desirous that your Arms should appear in the work, I shall be glad to get them drawn and engraved by the first heraldic artists of the day. The average price of a single Coat will be 21s.; if with quarterings, about two guineas. The cost will fall upon you, and the wood block will become your own property." Mr. Dodgson's project evidently failed, and the blocks passed through a London dealer to me by purchase. In 1874 Mr. Joseph Foster issued three large quarto volumes at eight guineas (with a score copies on extra large imperial paper, and the folding pedigrees mounted on linen, at sixteen guineas), under the title, "Pedigrees of the County Families of Yorkshire," with heraldic illustrations to each family.

Haworth Past and Present: A History of Haworth, Stanbury Oxenhope. E-book. Formato PDF J. Horsfall Turner   -  Forgotten Books, 2017  -

This little handbook is the outcome of a conversation the writer had with a native of Haworth, who expressed an opinion that a history of the township would be as acceptable to the inhabitants as to the numerous visitors. Whether this volume will fully answer the acknowledged requirements, it is not for me to say. I have had the pleasure of gathering the notes, and the task of stringing them together. The gathering of historic data I have always felt to be a pleasure; the task of stringing them together has been almost invariably irksome. In the first place, I have little time, and (I ought to add) in the second, little ability to do more than I have done. The critic will ask, "Why meddle, then?" Well, I have this hobby, and it is one that will favourably compare with most hobbies. If this docs not disarm him I must plead that each one has his sphere, and that local effusions need all the encouragement they can command. I have pleasure in acknowledging kindly services from the Rev. James Whalley, Messrs. A. Holroyd, W. Scruton, and T. Fairbank.

Independency at Brighouse: Or, Bridge End Chapel Pastors and People. E-book. Formato PDF Joseph Horsfall Turner   -  Forgotten Books, 2017  -

Much Of the material in the following pages was gathered before the writer had well entered his teens. As years rolled on he extended his enquiries, and matter accumulated to such a degree that articles were prepared for a local newspaper. These Fragments Of Local His tory, instead Of lessening the stock brought a large accession of more valuable data; and he feels that inasmuch as fourteen years of his life have been spent at a distance from his native township, he will be justified in arranging his materials for a History Of Hipperholme cum-brighouse, so that an abler person may take the field, in the same way that a Wright's Halifax was superseded by awatson's. He ?atters himself that he will be able to give the name Of almost every person (not to mention family) who has resided in the township from 1300 to the present. These he has Obtained from Manorial Rolls, Church Registers, and innumerable deeds. The proposed volume will embrace the annals Of Coley and Lightcliffe Churches; histori cal sketches Oi the Friends, Moravians, and Methodists the town's Officers for nearly six hundred years; and material for pedigrees rang_ ing back to the immediate origin Of surnames, and scores Of other particulars. This, of course, means a large book, and the question arose as to the likelihood Of a great loss. The present little produc tion Of Bridge End Chapel was decided upon for several reasons First, Bridge End Chapel is situated outside the above-named town ship; secondly, the following pages condescend to chit-chat that would not be tolerated in a more pretentious volume; thirdly, to be a 'means of advertisement and financial test; and finally, to evoke further notes on hipperholme-cum-brighouse.
