The tremendous increase in the number of electric furnaces in steel foundries since the first edition of this book was written in 1913, and the refinements in electric furnace practice that have resulted, made a revision of this volume advisable. In these nine years, too, much has been added to our knowledge of moulding sands, heat treatment and a great many other phases of foundry practice, which the author has attempted to outline. The work of revision has, of necessity, been done in what little spare time it has been possible to find, and it is the hope of the author that the result will justify the effort expended.
