The first of these circumstances was, that, unconsciously, and probably wholly unknown to himself, the founder of the lecture ship had been for more than fifty years a constructive force in the mind life and spiritual life of the lecturer. It is not given us to know here what subtle in?uences go from us, fashioning other lives. Possibly it may be an element of the joy or sorrow of eternity to make the discovery. It gives me profound pleas ure to make this public acknowledgment of a long-standing debt of gratitude. The pressure of a hand laid on me when a strip ling is still sensibly felt.

In those days there were but few Cricket or Amateur Baseball Clubs in the neighborhood. Golf was almost unknown among the people at large, and the gen eral interest in athletics, that has since grown to such great proportions, was in its infancy in this country. This Club, therefore, would seem to be one of the few or ganizations still in active existence, that was among the pioneers in that really great movement — the introduction of Amateur sports a movement that has meant so much to the men of this country and to their posterity, and has made, we think, for the betterment of the nation, both in body and soul.

The eminent Song Dynasty Chan Master Fenyang Shanzhao (947-1024 CE) had the distinction of an entry in the canonical Jingde Chuandeng Lu, (Records of the Transmission of the Lamp) whilst still alive.
