Ci fu un’epoca d’oro, generalmente individuata nel periodo tra la fine della guerra e il 1960, in cui oscuri scrittori ignorati dalla società letteraria ma amati da intere tribù di lettori si rivelarono i cantori epici di nuovi mondi, pieni di orrori e meraviglie, che si andavano delineando nell’immaginazione – per fissarsi poi in un nuovo genere: la fantascienza. Fra questi primi maestri inevitabile è il nome di Theodore Sturgeon, e inevitabile è il suo capolavoro, 'Cristalli sognanti', che apparve nel 1950. Incontriamo qui una fantascienza che non ha bisogno di avventure extra-galattiche: basta guardare nelle viscere della terra, dove i cristalli vivono da milioni di anni, e sognano – «sogni fatti di carne e di linfa, di legno, di ossa e di sangue» – finché qualcuno degli umani non riesce a comunicare con loro. The chief purpose of this book is to give the methods, which many years of experience have proved to be both simple and effective, for tracing and remedying direct current motor and generator troubles. In addition, the questions of the selection, operation, care and repair of direct current machinery are analyzed from the standpoint of the operator.The theories of why a motor or generator will run, as well as the problems and fundamentals underlying the design of direct current machinery, have been very completely given and expounded in numerous excellent books on the market. But it is our belief that there is a vast army of operators in the electrical world who are greatly interested in why the motor or generator will not run, and it is to supply information on this topic that the present work has been written. Throughout, it is assumed that the operator is confronted with the question of selection of the best machine for his purpose; then with the question of the best operation of that machine and in case of troubles, with their tracing and effective remedying.In all cases, an effort has been made to treat the subjects in as general a way as possible so as to include all methods in good practice. Standard machines are described and illustrated so as to in no way limit and restrict the information to the operation of special types. We are greatly indebted to the General Electric Company, the Westinghouse Electric Manufacturing Company, and the Allis-Chalmers Company for their kindness in furnishing the illustrations for this publication.

The importance of preserving in permanent form the incidents in the history of every community has induced me to gather the materials for this volume. No one untried in such work is aware of the difficulties encountered in collecting unpublished facts. My honored father, Dr. Samuel W. Gold, in his advanced years undertook this work, and I shall confine myself mostly to editing his papers, adding such historical discourses as present our life in its home details, omitting in large degree what the sons of Corn wall have done in national affairs, as finding its appropriate place in national history. Of course this implies some repetition, but it is better to give original records than to trust to reorganizing them, for thus much of their peculiar value will be destroyed. If undue prominence appears to have been given to any events, we must remember that they were not considered as small by the actors in them, and per haps may thence derive some useful lessons for personal appli cation. I have solicited full details of family histories, and have waited a year for such documents. Too few have been presented. The leanness of this department is due to the neglect of those who ought to feel most interest.
