Historical Theology: A Review of the Principal Doctrinal Discussions in the Christian Church Since the Apostolic Age. E-book. Formato PDF William Cunningham - Forgotten Books, 2017 -
The two volumes now issued, under the general title of Historical Theology, are made up almost entirely of Lectures prepared by Dr Cunningham, and annually delivered by him to the students attending the Class of Church History over which he presided in the New College. The ms. Of the Lectures was left by him in a very perfect state, having undergone, in the course of successive years, no great alterations as to general sub stance or even particular statements, but having received careful revision from the Author in minor details.

WE now proceed to the consideration of the important subject of Justification; and it will be proper to enter somewhat more fully into the investigation of this topic than those which we have hitherto examined. This was the great fundamental distinguish ing doctrine of the Reformation, and was regarded by all the Reformers as of primary and paramount importance. The leading charge which they adduced against the Church of Rome was, that she had corrupted and perverted the doctrine of Scripture upon this subject in a way that was dangerous to the souls of men; and it was mainly by the exposition, enforcement, and application of the true doctrine of God's word in regard to it, that they assailed and overturned the leading doctrines and practices of the Papal system. There is no subject which possesses more of intrinsic im portance than attaches to this one, and there is none with respect to which the Reformers were more thoroughly harmonious in their sentiments. All who believe that the truth on this subject had been greatly corrupted in the Church of Rome, and that the doctrine taught by the Reformers respecting it was scriptural and true, must necessarily regard the restoration of sound doctrine upon this point as the most important service which the Reformers were made instrumental by God in rendering to the church.

IN introducing the present volume to the Public, the Editors feel that a few words of explanation may be desirable, in regard to the trust assigned to them, and the manner in which they have, in so far, attempted to discharge it. In the interview which, at Dr Cunningham's request, they had with him within a few hours of his death, he committed to them the charge of his whole writings and manuscripts connected with the College, to be deposited in the Library, and to be used and applied to any purpose they judged right; stating, that he gave them absolute power to do in the matter as they considered to be best for his character, and the good of the Church. The charge thus verbally intrusted to them was formally and legally confirmed by the Trustees acting under Dr Cunningham's settlement; so that the Editors became invested with the character of his Literary Executors, and with the full powers and responsibilities attaching to such an office.
