As knowledge increases, the attitude of science towards the things of the invisible world is undergoing considerable modification. Its attention is no longer directed solely to the earth with all its variety of objects, or to the physical worlds around it; but it finds itself compelled to glance further afield, and to construct hypotheses as to the nature of the matter and force which lie in the regions beyond the ken of its instruments. Ether is now comfortably settled in the scientific kingdom, becoming almost more than a hypothesis. Mesmerism, under its new name of hypnotism, is no longer an outcast. Reichenbach's experiments are still looked at askance, but are not wholly condemned. Röntgen's rays have rearranged some of the older ideas of matter, while radium has revolutionised them, and is leading science beyond the borderland of ether into the astral world. The boundaries between animate and inanimate matter are broken down. Magnets are found to be possessed of almost uncanny powers, transferring certain forms of disease in a way not yet satisfactorily explained. Telepathy, clairvoyance, movement without contact, though not yet admitted to the scientific table, are approaching the Cinderella-stage.

Clairvoyance means literally nothing more than 'clear-seeing,' and it is a word which has been sorely misused, and even degraded so far as to be employed to describe the trickery of a mountebank in a variety show. Even in its more restricted sense it covers a wide range of phenomena, differing so greatly in character that it is not easy to give a definition of the word which shall be at once succinct and accurate. It has been called 'spiritual vision,' but no rendering could well be more misleading than that, for in the vast majority of cases there is no faculty connected with it which has the slightest claim to be honoured by so lofty a name. For the purpose of this treatise we may, perhaps, define it as the power to see what is hidden from ordinary physical sight. It will be as well to premise that it is very frequently (though by no means always) accompanied by what is called clairaudience, or the power to hear what would be inaudible to the ordinary physical ear; and we will for the nonce take our title as covering this faculty also, in order to avoid the clumsiness of perpetually using two long words where one will suffice.

Chiaroveggenza letteralmente significa "vedere chiaramente", è una parola di cui si è gravemente abusato, spesso è stata degradata al punto di essere impiegata per descrivere gli inganni dei saltimbanchi negli spettacoli di varietà. E' stata definita "visione spirituale", ma un simile concetto è estremamente fuorviante, poichè nella stragrande maggioranza dei casi non vi è alcuna facoltà che possa avere la minima pretesa di essere onorata da un così alto nome. Ai fini di questo trattato si può, forse, definire come il potere di vedere ciò che è nascosto all'ordinaria vista fisica. Molto frequentemente (anche se non sempre) è accompagnata da ciò che viene chiamata chiarudienza, o il potere di udire ciò che va oltre all'udito fisico ordinario. Ora questa affermazione seppur vera, sembra abbastanza vaga e irreale per la maggioranza delle persone. Può contribuire a dissipare questo senso di irrealtà cercare di capire che la chiaroveggenza, come tante altre cose in natura, è principalmente una questione di vibrazioni, ed è in realtà semplicemente un ampliamento delle abilità che tutti noi utilizziamo ogni giorno della nostra vita.
