Quanti saranno stati i santuari dell'Umbria? Quanti ne conosciamo oggi? È difficile rispondere alla prima domanda, innumerevoli di certo più di quelli attuali. Sul secondo quesito siamo più preparati grazie ad un recente volume, curato da Mario Tosti e Chiara Coletti, dove vengono elencati, analizzati e illustrati decine e decine di edifici, luoghi e spazi sacri rispondenti a questa categoria. Scorrendo questo fondamentale lavoro, scopriamo che sono differenti i caratteri dimensionali dei santuari: ora costruzioni imponenti altre volte piccole chiese campestri. Mentre dal punto di vista della destinazione abbiamo a che fare con monumenti esclusivamente dedicati al pellegrinaggio oppure con luoghi ricavati all'interno di edifici con vocazione principale differente. Verso un edificio extraurbano e 'specializzato' si è indirizzata la ricerca condotta da Cristina Lemmi.
How many sanctuaries were there in Umbria? How many do we know today? It is difficult to answer the first question, certainly more than the current ones. On the second question we are better prepared thanks to a recent volume, edited by Mario Tosti and Chiara Coletti, where dozens and dozens of sacred buildings, places and spaces corresponding to this category are listed, analyzed and illustrated. Scrolling through this fundamental work, we discover that the dimensional characteristics of the sanctuaries are different: sometimes imposing buildings, sometimes small country churches. While from the point of view of the destination we are dealing with monuments exclusively dedicated to pilgrimage or with places created inside buildings with a different main vocation. The research conducted by Cristina Lemmi has been directed towards an extra-urban and 'specialized' building.
