The families have been found to be much more numerous and more widely scattered than had been supposed. And consequently the labor and expense in collecting the material has been greater than was at first estimated. The author has used all honorable means to procure extended and complete records of families and sketches of individuals, and a generally commendable interest has been manifested, but it is to be regretted that many to whom the blanks were sent have failed to make returns, and in numerous instances the request has been renewed by urgent appeals, with out avail. The posterity of John Guild is presented with very few persons unaccounted for in the male lines.
