Originally from France, from whence he ?ed to escape the dangers of prescription, Almy seems to have been a leader of men, for we find him among those intrepid Norman followers of William the Conqueror, the majority of whom were knights, and all of whom were soldiers. He was probably in the train of Hugh d'avaranches, Earl of Chester, better known as Hugh the Wolf, who crossed the Dee, invaded North Wales, made himself master of a part of Flintshire, built the castle of Rhuddlan, and pre pared the way for the final subjugation of the Welsh, a project the Normans never abandoned until it was com pleted two centuries later by Edward 1.
