Libraries, printing and catalogs imply booksellers, and from the early days of the Massachusetts Bay Colony the English traders found a welcome market for books in the New World. John Dunton, the eccentric bookseller who came to Boston in 1 686 with an invoice of books which he offered to Harvard College, although one of the best known, was by no means the first of Boston booksellers. John Usher, as early as 1685, had received invoices of books from London, where he had connections with the leading booksellers and publishers, and for inany years the Ushers, father and son, carried on the book trade in Boston.
