Die Mazurka entstand im 17. Jahrhundert als polnischer Tanz bäuerlicher regionaler Herkunft und soll ihre markante Betonung auf dem unbetonten Schlag eines Taktes der polnischen Sprache selbst entliehen haben. Als Raff die Grande Mazurka komponierte, existierte die Form fast ausschliesslich als Salonstück und mit diesem Werk verfolgte Raff die von Komponisten wie Chopin entwickelte Praxis, der Mazurka auch einen Platz in der hohen Tradition der Kunstmusik einzuräumen.
