The author whom we here introduce to the English public was of the brood of the giants. He is to be thought of with Lope de Vega, with Voltaire, with Alexandre Dumas, not as regards the nature of his writings, but as regards their bulk, their volume, their encyclopaedic character. The works of Kraszewski form a library in themselves. His bibliographers record the names of more than four hundred and fifty volumes, and confess that their list is incomplete in every direction. He wrote with ceaseless abundance from boyhood to Old age his study was a vast factory of literature, a sort Of huge imaginative pottery-works where every Species of goods was being turned out at once, from sewage pipes up to the most delicate porcelain, all made on the spot, and distributed to an eager and impatient population. It is difficult to comprehend how Poles can have had anything else to do, throughout the lifetime of Kraszewski, except to read his works. He treated with absolute confidence, ?uency, and earnestness every known subject, exemplified all the arts, brightened all the sciences, left his personal mark upon every branch of intellectual effort.
