Amazon needs a rich and diverse library of e-books - titles. Bezos saw Rocketbook and later Sony Reader fall into difficult situations because of the small number of books. There aren't many e-books available to device owners. His goal is to build a book store of one hundred thousand titles, including 90% of the best-selling titles according to the New York Times, ready to download when the device is released to the market. At that time, publishers digitized newly published books with good sales, about 20,000 titles. The completed Kindle book warehouse has helped him partly realize his dream of a million-item store, a comprehensive library archive, extremely convenient for customers to access. And to realize this dream, Amazon will have to pressure, cajole and even threaten some longtime partners, companies that have considered Amazon as an absolutely trusted partner.
Back in the early days, the relationship between Amazon and book publishers was often simple and largely symbiotic. The company sources most of its books from Ingram, Baker & Taylor and other distributors. In the rare cases when these distributors no longer have a title in stock, Amazon buys directly from the publisher. This happened frequently but there were no significant encounters during those years. Bezos has often said publicly that publishers hate customers commenting on their titles, fearing that harsh, anonymous criticism online could reduce sales. Publishers and the Authors Guild also complained about the presence of third-party booksellers who sell used books on the site.
