EARLY IN THE MORNING, AS THE SUN HAD RISEN, Charlie flew to the otters' quarters. The cool, chilly air gently soothed his aching body. For weeks now, he had been stressed and sleepless every night, but he decided to give it a try, even if it meant he believed the old sea turtle.
Charlie wasn't quite sure why Oscar wanted him to go see the sea otter. He walked into the stone fence, looked around the tank and saw a flock of otters floating their backs. Looks like they're sleeping.
"That's cool!" He thought, "Oscar told me to come here to watch the otters sleep. This really surprised me."
Later, Charlie noticed a pair of otters, a big one, and a little girl swimming together. She climbed on top of the big one, stretched one and slept in the big one's lap. When the big otter languidly turned her back she saw Charlie through her cracked eyelids, she smiled and waved Charlie with her clawed hands. Charlie flew over and landed on a nearby rock.
"You must be Charlie?" the otter greeted her friendly. "Oscar told me you're coming here this morning. My name is Imata. Nice to meet you."
"Hello," Charlie greeted clearly, "Who is that person who clung to you?"
"Oh, this boy? Imata asked with a smile as she stroked the little otter's nose feathers and replied, "This is my son, Acha."
"You used to let it cling to your neck like that?" Charlie asked.
"Yes, what do you mean?" Imata looked at Charlie implicitly.
"I mean it's big. I thought it had to be on its own a while ago."
"Yes, I know you might think so. But I usually spend about six months with my children until they can live on their own."
"What are you doing that for?"
"That's the only way I can be sure they understand what they need to do on their own. Being a sea otter isn't as easy as you think, Charlie. We have to brush regularly and properly so that those coats are as useful as possible. We had to stay away from whales, great white sharks that specialize in hunting. And I love watching you plunge to the bottom of the sea and bring back a sea urchin, not to mention that you smash their bodies and eat them while swimming."
