Con questi accenti di grande riconoscenza, il 6 gennaio 1959, da Londra, il medico Max Mayer, ebreo originario di Bonn, esule dalla Germania negli anni Trenta per sfuggire alle persecuzioni di Hitler, si rivolgeva a Tommaso Fiore, ricordandogli il peso che, nella sua formazione, aveva avuto quel gruppo di intellettuali liberalsocialisti che l'avevano accolto a Bari, giovane studente di Medicina, indicandogli la via maestra della democrazia. Il sodalizio che intreccerà nelle famiglie Fiore, Cifarelli, Canfora, Laterza, costituirà un' esperienza indimenticabile e centrale anche quando, ormai laureato ed emigrato in India e poi a Londra, manterrà i contatti con gli amici e maestri di un tempo. Quella vicenda esaltante viene ricostruita, insieme alla tragedia di un'epoca, attraverso il carteggio inedito che, per mezzo secolo, Mayer intrattiene con Tommaso Fiore, Michele Cifarelli, Fabrizio Canfora, con le loro famiglie e con i giovani antifascisti che gli si raccolsero intorno.

With these words of deep gratitude, on January 6, 1959, from London, the doctor Max Mayer, Jew originally from Bonn, exiled from Germany in the 1930s to escape persecution by Hitler, was addressing Tommaso Fiore, reminding him of the burden that, in its formation, had a group of liberal intellectuals who had welcomed in Bari, young medical student, pointing to the high road of democracy.
