The goal of this "Short History of the Portuguese Language" is the historical description of the Portuguese language, from Latin origins to early written texts, from Old Portuguese to contemporary. In this path the text seeks to highlight the importance of those crucial historical moments that, in the light of metalinguistic reflection, allow a broader interpretation of what is usually considered the phase of formation and processing of the Lusitanian idiom. For the history of the Portuguese language, these moments are two, external to the language, but deeply linked to it. The first is the proclamation of the kingdom of Portugal in 1179, after the recognition of independence by Pope Alexander III ("Bolla Manifestis Probatum"); The second is the civil war that culminated in the Battle of Aljubarrota (1385) and the subsequent rise to power of the Avis dynasty. On closer inspection, then, there are two moments when the Portuguese process of processing should be distinguished. The first, in which the reference model is ancient Portuguese, that is, a linguistic variety with many traits in common with the gallego; the second, in which the variety of language chosen as the model for the processing process is Portuguese implanted in the south-central regions with the reconquest.
