L'arco di Druso sulla via Appia: Il paesaggio del tratto urbano della via Appia è tutt'oggi animato da eminenti resti di epoca antica, fra i quali si annovera l'arco tradizionalmente definito "così detto di Druso". Il monumentale fornice, che si erge a pochi passi da porta San Sebastiano, ha per secoli attirato l'attenzione di curiosi, artisti e studiosi che fin dagli albori del Rinascimento ne hanno scrutato e rappresentato le forme architettoniche. L'indagine sulla storia dell'arco, raccontata in questo volume, nasce dall'osservazione delle evidenti tracce dei tanti usi di cui è stato protagonista, dapprima come arco marmoreo a cavallo della via Appia, poi come sostegno dell'Aqua Antoniniana e infine, in età moderna, come fronte monumentale della controporta della porta San Sebastiano. Intrecciando tutte le categorie di fonti disponibili si ripercorrono le tappe evolutive della storia dell'arco dall'antichità al contemporaneo in una prospettiva globale, sensibile alle trasformazioni di un frammento del paesaggio urbano del quadrante meridionale di Roma.
The landscape of the urban section of the Appian Way is still animated by eminent remains of ancient times, among which is the arch traditionally referred to as "so-called Druse". The monumental furnace, which stands a few steps from The San Sebastiano Gate, has for centuries attracted the attention of curious, artists and scholars who since the dawn of the Renaissance have scrutinized and represented the architectural forms. The investigation into the history of the arch, told in this volume, stems from the observation of the obvious traces of the many uses of which it was the protagonist, first as a marble arch straddling the Appian Way, then as support of the Aqua Antoniniana and finally, in the age monumental front of the counter-door of the San Sebastiano gate. Weaving all the categories of sources available we trace the evolutionary stages of the history of the arch from antiquity to the contemporary in a global perspective, sensitive to the transformations of a fragment of the urban landscape of the southern quadrant Rome.
