Danza, musica, arte e società: In occasione dei festeggiamenti nel bicentenario della nascita del maître de ballet Marius Petipa (1818-1910), sono stati organizzati eventi, spettacoli di danza e convegni in tutto il mondo. L'originalità del presente volume, dedicato al celebre coreografo, è nel taglio storico-critico volto, da un lato, a investigare l'epoca in cui Marius Petipa ha operato, cercando di comprendere le motivazioni artistiche, culturali, storiche e politiche che ne determinarono in Russia l'immediata fortuna, così come il repentino declino agli inizi del Novecento; dall'altro, a sondare in che modo l'eredità del balletto classico di Petipa sia stata salvaguardata o abbia subito trasformazioni dovute al mutare dei costumi e alla diversa recezione del pubblico, e ai problemi di trasmissione orale e scritta del repertorio connaturati nella danza.
Events, dance performances and conventions were organized around the world to celebrate the bicentenary of the birth of ballet master Marius Petipa (1818-1910). The originality of this volume, dedicated to the famous choreographer, is in the historical-critical cut aimed, on the one hand, to investigate the era in which Marius Petipa worked, trying to understand the artistic, cultural, historical and political motivations that determined in Russia the immediate luck, as well as the sudden decline at the beginning of the twentieth century; on the other hand, to probe how the legacy of Petipa's classical ballet has been safeguarded or undergone transformations due to the changing of the costumes and the different perceptions of the audience, and the problems of oral and written transmission of the repertoire inherent dance.
