Il lungometraggio segue tre irriducibili musicisti black metal (Sina degli iraniani From The Vastland, Kaiadas dei greci Naer Mataron ed Héctor dei colombiani Luciferian) svelando la retorica e il mito che aleggiano intorno a uno dei generi più estremi al mondo, mostrando la dedizione, l'ambizione, le aspettative, i rischi e i pericoli che comporta suonare la cosiddetta musica del demonio. Blackhearts arriva per la prima volta in DVD in versione italiana per Tsunami Edizioni, in collaborazione con Metal Hammer Italia, con un libro di accompagnamento intitolato "Dawn of the Blackhearts. Tre vite per il black metal" che narra la storia delle band protagoniste e svela cosa è accaduto dopo la fine delle riprese del documentario. Il volume è inoltre corredato da interviste a band di spicco della scena black metal norvegese quali Keep Of Kalessin, Darkthrone, Satyricon, Aura Noir, Mortiis e altre.
