La maggior parte dei poggiatesta fa parte dalla collezione Goodall. In veste di ricercatore, collezionista e commerciante d'arte africana, Bruce Goodall ha intrapreso numerosi viaggi sul campo a partire dal 2003, raccogliendo, intervistando e fotografando i proprietari di oggetti tradizionali. The book presents in a new light the fascinating world of headrests widespread in southern Africa. With unique historical and personal testimonies, collected by many of the owners and carvers of these artifacts, often accompanied by photographs in situ, the book tells the story, as well as that of those who guard this ancient tradition. The 438 specimens from the collections of Bruce Goodall (Cape Town) and Frédéric Zimer (Paris) are presented according to the three geographical areas of origin: KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo (homeland of the Ntwane people) and Eswatini (area formerly known as Swaziland). Most of the headrests are part of the Goodall collection. As a researcher, collector and dealer in African art, Bruce Goodall has undertaken numerous field trips since 2003, collecting, interviewing and photographing owners of traditional objects. In 2017 the Goodall collection was significantly expanded with the purchase of Clive Newman's heritage, a complete set of headrests originating in the Msinga area of KwaZulu-Natal. This collection was assembled in the late 80s and mid-2000s by Mavis Duma and the late Anglican priest Clive Newman, who purchased the headrests along the rural areas of Msinga, Ladysmith, to the foothills of the Drakensberg mountain range. The Zimer collection, on the other hand, has been brought together since the 90s through the numerous trips of Frédéric Zimer in Africa and thanks to his acquisitions by collectors and traders
